• Principle Investigator (PI) - An individual, University Programs or Public Education.
• Course: If the PI is University Programs, select the course with which you are associated.
• AUP: Select an Animal Use Protocol (AUP). The AUP will prescribe the species that may be collected. A collection must be associated with an AUP.

Under any AUP, collections can be made on multiple dates. Use Add, Edit, Delete, Save and Close to manage date records. Dates with associated sites can't be deleted.

• Collection Date: click on the calendar to select a date.
• Collector Names: list name(s) of collector(s)
• Weather: Select from wind, rain or sun
• Comments: ONLY comment about the date, collector(s) or weather conditions. i.e. ?
• QC passed? a check mark indicates the record has passed quality control
• QC by: name of person who performed quality control, typically the Animal Care Coordinator
• QC Date: date quality control was performed

For any date, collections can be recorded at multiple sites. You must select a date (click on row) to add a site. Use Add, Edit, Delete, Save and Close to manage site records. Sites with associated organisms or parameters can't be deleted.

• Location: Gazetted place-names such as Eagle Bay, Bamfield and Sanford Island. Each collection site is associated with a Location (closest gazetted place-name), marked by the Yellow pin.
• Latitude/Longitude: Coordinates of the collection site. Red pins mark collection sites.
• General Habitat: Marine (including the upper inter-tidal terrestrial interface), Freshwater or Terrestrial (including riparian).
• Comments: ONLY comment on characteristics of the site and helpful tips on how to find it. Characteristics could include water temperature, salinity, waves, swell, current, turbidity etc. An example of tips: In the surge channel off the west edge of Eagle Bay.

How to map a collection site:

1. Only map collections made within Barkley Sound (purple boundary)
2. Move to the general area of the collection. You can Pan and zoom, select the closest Location name, or enter lat/long coordinates.
3. Use the Terrain, Satellite or Hybrid coverage (upper right corner of map) to help locate the collection site.
4. Click on the collection site. A red pin will mark the spot. Make adjustments by clicking and dragging the pin. Site coordinates will be displayed in Latitude/Longitude boxes.
5. Select a Location (nearest gazetted place). If you know the name, select from drop down menu. If you don't, click the box 'Show/Filter nearby Locations'. The 15 closest Locations will appear as green balloons. Select the most appropriate Location for your collection site.
6. Zoom to Extent can be used if the site and Location are not visible at the same time.

For each site, collections of multiple organisms can be recorded. You must select a site (click on row) to add a Site Organism.

• Organism: select an organism from the drop down. Choice is limited to organisms approved under the AUP. Organisms are defined at different taxonomic levels (i.e. species and families).
• Identification Confidence: select Confident, Somewhat Confident or Unsure
• Population Estimate: select Undetermined, Few, Common, or Abundant
• Depth/Height: Select the depth/height at which this organism was collected. Depth/height of the site is also recorded under site parameters.
• Number collected: Enter an integer
• Fate: select Undetermined, Will be euthanized or Will be returned. If you collected several animals, some of which will be euthanized and others returned, you must record them in separate Site Organism records. This is necessary to facilitate reporting to federal agencies.
• Specimen Reference: If the organism is a herbarium or museum specimen, record the specimen number and collection.
• Comments: ONLY comment on the organism. For example, morphological or colour deviations, food, predators, associations, reproductive condition, size, behaviour etc.

Each Site has an associated set of parameters. You must select a Site (click on row) to add parameters. Parameter values are specific to Marine, Freshwater and Terrestrial sites. Use Add, Edit, Delete, Save and Close to manage Parameter records.

If you need a new parameter value, contact the true)) ?>. For example, if you used a piece of equipment new to BMSC.

• Substrate : leave blank or select a substrate type
• Habitat type: leave blank or select a habitat type
• Height / Depth: leave blank or select a depth/height for the collection site. Depth/Height is also recorded for each organism in the site organism record.
• Equipment: leave blank or select the type of equipment used
• Profile: leave blank or select the aspect of the site
• Operation type: leave blank or select the operation used
• Exposure: select N/A for freshwater and terrestrial sites. Select Protected, Semi-protected, or Exposed for Marine sites
